USA Fencing New Points System
Understanding USA Fencing's New Points System
Beginning August 1, 2026, USA Fencing introduced a new points and competition structure for Cadet, Junior, and Division I athletes.
At ASER International Fencing Academy, we want to help parents and athletes understand these changes and make informed decisions about their competitive fencing journey.
1. How Does the New Points System Work?
Under the new Unified Points System, each athlete's national ranking is calculated using their six best individual tournament results.
Athletes can earn points at local, regional, national, and designated international competitions.
The system uses rolling results, meaning older results are eventually replaced or expire.
2. What Are Elite and Challenger Competitions?
National competitions with 169 or more registered athletes are divided into two categories:
Elite Division
Features the highest-ranked eligible athletes.
Maximum of 112 competitors.
Awards significantly more ranking points.
Challenger Division
Provides opportunities for developing competitive athletes.
Maximum of 224 competitors.
Allows athletes to earn national ranking points and progress toward Elite competition.
Events with 168 or fewer competitors remain a single Elite-tier competition.
3. How Many Points Can Athletes Earn?
The maximum points awarded for winning selected competitions are:
CompetitionCadetJuniorElite NAC600800Challenger NAC120160SJCC90120Regional6080Local (standard)3040
Actual points depend on finishing placement. Local tournament values also vary according to event strength.
4. How Do Athletes Qualify for National Competitions?
Under the new system, athletes generally need:
Cadet NAC: 100 Unified points
Junior NAC: 100 Unified points
Division I NAC: 150 Unified points
Additional age and rating eligibility requirements still apply.
5. Does This Change National Team Selection?
No.
USA Fencing continues to use its existing Legacy Points System for international team selection during the trial period.
The new Unified Points System determines domestic rankings, tournament seeding, national event eligibility, and Elite or Challenger placement.
6. What Does This Mean for Young Fencers?
The new structure creates a clearer progression from local and regional competitions to national-level fencing.
Athletes can build their rankings through consistent participation and strong performances.
At ASER International Fencing Academy, our goal is to help athletes develop the technical skills, competitive experience, and strategic understanding necessary to progress through each stage.
